COMMUNITY MEETING RECAP

21 neighbors joined us at Joselito’s Mexican Restaurant in Tujunga for local updates, crime information, questions, and complimentary iced tea and coffee.

CRIME UPDATE

Good news:

Sunland: 150 serious crimes so far this year, down from 175.

Tujunga: 140 serious crimes so far this year — the lowest in the Foothill Division.

LAPD Senior Lead Officer Gloria Caloca said Tujunga has had two more burglaries than at this time last year.

Her message was simple: Preventing a burglary is easier and less expensive than repairing the damage afterward.

PROTECT YOUR HOME

Neighbors can work together to make our community safer.

• Keep valuables and expensive vehicles out of sight when possible.

• Lock windows, sliding doors, gates, and outdoor electrical boxes.

• Use lights or timers when you are away.

• Ask a trusted person to collect mail and packages while you travel.

• Do not post vacation plans on social media.

• Consider hardwired security cameras.

• Create a neighborhood WhatsApp group to share useful safety information.

• Report clearly suspicious activity to LAPD.

HOMELESSNESS & VACANT PROPERTIES

Police and city staff continue working on local homeless encampments and problem properties.

A vacant building on Commerce Avenue has caused neighborhood concerns. City officials are working to have the property secured.

Residents can report problems with vacant buildings to LADBS and should continue using the MyLA311 app to report local problems.

E-BIKES

Police also discussed unsafe e-bike riding.

Parents should make sure young riders understand traffic laws and ride safely. Some fast electric vehicles are legally motorcycles, not e-bikes, and may require a driver’s license.

PARKS & COMMUNITY

Police reported improvements at Sunland Park, including action on an encampment and abandoned vehicles.

CD7 representative Ricardo Flores shared updates about community events and plans to improve Sunland Park, including a possible dog park.

CD7 is also working with Little Landers Park and the YMCA and plans to survey residents and businesses about local needs.

OTHER UPDATES

• Catalytic converters were recently stolen on Amanita Drive.

• LAPD is increasing some nighttime patrols.

• The recent CD7 drone show drew about 6,000 people with few problems.

• The Craving Night Market was discussed, including safety, permits, and neighborhood concerns.

• The speed limit near schools is now 15 MPH in applicable school zones. Slow down and watch the signs.

• Residents are encouraged to listen to City Council and LAPD Commission meetings.
