Pruning an Oak Tree, When, and If, You Should Do It

Posted on 11/22/22

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

Larchmont Buzz Article
-- article regarding pruning of Oak trees

Last  month, Buzz contributor Emina Darakjy introduced Buzz readers to the Cork Oak tree. Her story prompted Buzz reader K. Mulligan to ask when an oak tree should be trimmed, if at all.  In 2011, the Ridgewood Wilton neighborhood planted a California Live Oak in the traffic island at the corner of Wilton Place/Wilton Drive/Second Street. The tree has been nicely maintained by the neighborhood, but was never pruned. Her question — “how to do you know if an oak should be pruned at some point?”

We took some photos of the Coastal Live Oak and sent them to Emina. Below is her answer, lightly edited. Please feel free to email at [email protected] us if you have any tree questions for Emina!

Neighborhood Watch Meeting Notes of 15 November 2022

Posted on 11/17/22

Sunland-Tujunga & Nearby Areas
Neighborhood Watch Meeting Notes
of 15 November 2022

CRIME STATS:
Tujunga (termed "59" as an LAPD area) has 2 fewer burglaries than last year and the largest decrease in crime in the Division! Nearly all crime stats are down; the only uptick is robberies.
Sunland (termed "35" in LAPD parlance) has 2 more than last year, up from 12 to 14. Down 4% in thefts from motor vehicles.
Repeated advice: Stay alert—not on your cell phone—at gas stations, ATMs. Shop early in the day and keep your head on a swivel. Don't invite problems by walking alone at night.
Mt. Gleason Middle School lockdown began with pursuit of a stolen motorcycle; suspect was just running from police, not seeking to harm any student. He was captured in a house next door.
Traffic Officer Joel Flores Spoke!
The bad news for S-T is that Officer Flores will be retiring 28 February next year. He has been a mainstay of traffic control in our area of the San Fernando Valley, and we wish him well deserved joy in all future endeavors!
He reminded us we are all Valley Traffic's eyes and ears. If he hears no complaints, there will be less police activity.

National Preparedness Month

Posted on 09/22/22

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

For the past several months, California has been hit with record-breaking heat waves, fires, and a tropical storm in parts of Southern California. Evidence shows that the adverse weather we’ve experienced, particularly the extreme heat is not an anomaly, but a pattern we should now expect every year due to climate change. While we can’t predict the future, National Preparedness Month reminds us that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year to ensure that we are ready to respond to disasters when they occur.

Be prepared and stay informed.

THE STORY OF THE VERDUGO HILLS CEMETERY

Little Landers Historical Society invites visitors to view a recently installed temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum featuring our local pioneer cemetery, now in its 100th year.  The first burial was that of beloved local preacher, Pastor Wornum, on April 22, 1922.  The Hills of Peace, as it was known early on, became the final resting place of many local community pioneers with burials continuing through the late 1970’s.

The exhibit traces the history of the cemetery through good times and not so good times up to today’s restoration conducted by the Friends of the Verdugo Hills Cemetery

Exhibit Viewing Hours through June, 2022 are Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. and by appointment.

Bolton Hall Museum, Home of Little Landers Historical Society     10110 Commerce Avenue, Tujunga, CA 91042

CDC Updates & Shortens Recommended Isolation & Quarantine Period for General Population

Posted on 01/01/22

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

The following is attributable to CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky:

“The Omicron variant is spreading quickly and has the potential to impact all facets of our society. CDC’s updated recommendations for isolation and quarantine balance what we know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided by vaccination and booster doses. These updates ensure people can safely continue their daily lives. Prevention is our best option: get vaccinated, get boosted, wear a mask in public indoor settings in areas of substantial and high community transmission, and take a test before you gather.”

Comeback Checks Program up to $5,000 for your small business

Posted on 10/26/21

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

Applications open today - Tuesday, October 26, 2021 - for the first round of the $25M “Comeback Checks” COVID-19 financial recovery program (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnFc05Ta7vI). $5,000 grants are available for 5,000 small businesses located and operated within the City of Los Angeles. Grant recipients will be selected through a weighted lottery process, with final award recommendations based on availability of funds, program guidelines, submission of all required information, and supporting documentation.
This $25 million investment was made possible through American Rescue Plan funds. Awardees can use the grant for employee payroll and benefits, rent, utilities, insurance, and more. Later this winter, the City will provide $12 million in Rental Assistance to further aid in the economic recovery of L.A.’s small businesses.

All applications for this first round are due by November 2, 2021. For more information on requirements and to apply, visit ComeBackChecksLA.com. For additional assistance in applying, contact our local Business Source Center in Pacoima at 818-302-6114 or at [email protected].

To support struggling small businesses, the City of LA recently allocated $50 million in the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) through the recent budget process to implement a series of programs that promote a strong and equitable economic recovery, consistent with ARPA regulations.

The $25M City of Los Angeles “Comeback Checks” program is launching October 26, 2021. Funding will be distributed over several rounds. The application period for Round 1 begins Tuesday and closes Monday November 2, 2021.

BIG:LEAP Pilot Program - Financial Assistance

Posted on 10/26/21

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

L.A. residents who qualify will be able to apply, beginning tomorrow morning, for a no-strings-attached $1,000 monthly cash deposit for 12 months. Approximately 3,000 Angelenos will be randomly selected to receive the funds and participate in a research study to help measure impact. Please share this important message with anyone who might qualify.

Poverty touches the lives of more than 38 million people living in America today. That's close to 12% of the U.S. population. And it hits even closer to home here in LA. For many Angelenos, the ability to achieve financial security is simply not possible. We face the burdens of the high costs of living, unaffordable housing options, insufficient wages, and the economic difficulties caused by COVID-19. BIG:LEAP is the largest guaranteed basic income pilot in the U.S. to break the cycle of poverty. While no single program can reverse decades of economic and racial inequality that marginalize low-income people of color, BIG:LEAP can point the way towards a more equitable and prosperous future.

To qualify, one must live in the City of Los Angeles, be over the age of 18, have an income at or below the Federal Poverty Level, have at least one dependent child or be pregnant, and have experienced economic and/or medical hardship related to COVID-19. Visit BIGLEAP.lacity.org for more information; the website is now live. Applications will open tomorrow, Friday, at 8a - and will continue until November 7!

Valley Traffic now has a weekly meeting. It's a great forum to Zoom in your questions and problems.

?? Sunland Senior Lead Officer (SLO) Cesar Contreras said his area has 20% fewer "Part 1" (serious) crimes, a huge drop. Although summer is usually busiest for police, Sunland is still on track for lower stats.
?? Tujunga SLO Gloria Caloca says her area is 14% lower in Part 1, but porch-pirating is up. Let's keep our eyes sharp and alert neighbors! Visible cameras deter some thieves, but place cams at eye level. "We can't ID someone by the top of their head or their baseball cap."

Below are the key proposals for your knowledge. As a reminder, this still needs to be approved by City Council and would then go into effect on June 1st.

UPDATE: MOBILE VACCINE CLINIC AVAILABLE FOR CD7 RESIDENTS

Posted on 04/16/21

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

Attention CD7 residents! The pandemic has disproportionately impacted the Northeast San Fernando Valley, especially in working class, Latino neighborhoods. With many residents working in essential jobs and living in crowded, multigenerational households, the virus has spread quickly through the community, and our case rates and fatality rates have been high. We are happy to offer a mobile vaccine clinic that brings vaccinations right here into the district, easing access for those that may not have internet access or transportation to get to far-away vaccine sites.

We are currently taking FIRST DOSE appointments for our mobile vaccination clinic, which will be in Pacoima this week, Sylmar next week, and back in Sunland-Tujunga the following week. Anyone with an appointment at one of our pop-up vaccine sites in Council District 7 will receive a Pfizer vaccine. These pop-up locations are walk-up, not drive-thru, and will provide FREE vaccines by appointment regardless of immigration status. As of this week, anyone over the age of 16 is now eligible to receive a vaccination. Please see the attached flyers for more information.

If you have any questions or would like to get scheduled right away, please contact our Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga District Office at (818) 352-3287 to make an appointment for your vaccine. Please spread the word so we can get all of our community members vaccinated and protected from this virus. Thank you, and stay safe!!

Healthy Buildings, Healthy Places

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this initiative will build upon the Citywide Design Guidelines by reinforcing linkages between health, equity, and planning; and recognizing the role that building design can play in promoting favorable health outcomes, particularly in communities of color that have long suffered from disinvestment. The guide will introduce practical strategies that place people first in the design of buildings and public spaces, through measures such as: adaptable indoor/outdoor common areas that animate shared spaces; placement of staircases to promote physical activity; usable balconies and outdoor rooms to provide areas of respite from stress and overcrowding; improved indoor air and daylighting; and special design considerations for at-risk populations in group living quarters such as nursing homes, which have been hard-hit by COVID-19.

Saturday October 10, 2020 (10/10/2020), from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
A Live Virtual Event! Held on valleydisasterfair.com

Top five reasons to get prepared NOW

  1. You live in Southern California.
  2. You might save your own life or the life of a loved one (human or pet).
  3. In a large disaster, emergency services will be overwhelmed and won't be there to help you for days or perhaps weeks.
  4. The first 60 minutes after a disaster are critical for survival. Do you have a plan to follow — or will you panic?
  5. When disaster strikes, the time for preparation just ended. Do you have food, water, and first-aid supplies at home, in your car, and at the office? Don't forget supplies for your pets! Prepare now!

Speed Humps | LADOT -- Application opens 9/16 [POSTPONED]

Posted on 09/01/20

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

Sept 2020-Cycle 7-Speed Hump Request:
At this time, this "Cycle 7" application process has been postponed and will reopen as soon as funding for the program is more certain. In short, this portal to intake requests will NOT be available at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 as previously anticipated.

This is not a decision the Department came to easily, and we understand the timing is difficult. However, we do not want to mislead the public by accepting applications we may not be able to fund construction thereafter.

This postponement does not affect previously approved applications, and we will continue to prioritize outstanding applications as funding becomes available.

LADOT remains committed to ensuring the continued delivery of essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic. For latest updates please visit our website at ladot.lacity.org.

Help keep Sunland-Tujunga streets safe and deter speeding, apply for the @LADOTofficial

  • Give your pet extra water. Always make sure that your dog or cat has plenty of fresh water to drink. If your dog enjoys ice cubes as a treat, add them to the bowl!

Posted on 06/21/19

Sunland-Tujunga Community Council

Join us Saturday, June 29th, 2019 when the Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates host the annual Budget Day at City Hall in Downtown Los Angeles! Invitations are extended to everyone; Los Angeles stakeholders, Neighborhood Council Board Members, Elected Officials, City Employees and members of the press and anyone interested in learning more about our City's budget.
On the 29th, registration and breakfast will begin at 7:30am in the 3rd floor rotunda. As breakfast concludes, guests will be invited into the John Ferraro Council Chamber for discussions on the City’s Budget. Not only about the changes and initiatives driving the FY19/20 plan, but the actual process and timeline.
Speakers for the day will include our Elected Officials, Department Representatives, and Budget Advocate leadership. As guests speakers are confirmed, additional details will be released.

Following the general session, attendees will be invited to smaller working groups with members from their respective areas in the City to discuss their greatest concerns, thoughts and suggestions on how their quality of life and how to improve it.
Here, each person will be able to share their priorities and get a better understanding of the Budget process to understand how they can influence the decisions made by our elected officials. Current members of the Budget Advocates will help facilitate the discussion and ensure everyone’s thoughts are documented so the Committee can incorporate them into their process this fiscal year.
For general questions, email the Executive Committee at [email protected].
