Healthy Buildings, Healthy PlacesPosted on 03/22/21
Healthy Buildings, Healthy Places
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this initiative will build upon the Citywide Design Guidelines by reinforcing linkages between health, equity, and planning; and recognizing the role that building design can play in promoting favorable health outcomes, particularly in communities of color that have long suffered from disinvestment. The guide will introduce practical strategies that place people first in the design of buildings and public spaces, through measures such as: adaptable indoor/outdoor common areas that animate shared spaces; placement of staircases to promote physical activity; usable balconies and outdoor rooms to provide areas of respite from stress and overcrowding; improved indoor air and daylighting; and special design considerations for at-risk populations in group living quarters such as nursing homes, which have been hard-hit by COVID-19.
